Kelley Burke[sp?] (UNC Greensboro) has published a book of Clarinet Warm-ups
that include this particular exercise and others. Lots of good stuff -
she's nice too. I recommend it for my students if they study with me
because I believe that it saves words.

David Weber always taught me (and his other students) to start long
tones on low E, crescendo and then strike the register key and taper off
into a pianissimo. I heard Jon Manasse practicing the same long tones
that I learned back in 1960 last summer in Colorado Springs. ANNIE
