A factor is that an older instrument is more likely (but not
guaranteed) to have passed the tests of major environmental changes
already. Thus the instruments that were more likely to crack have done
so already, and you never get to 'test' them yourself.

Therefore you may jump to the conclusion that older is better, but
in fact 'conditioning' of the wood may be irrelevant.
