Well, I messed that one up! I should have looked the article up
before I posted.
After I received an email that a plane hit 460 mph in 1939, I did
look it up. The article (October 1928) actually said that a
plane/rocket/whatever would need to fly at an _altitude_ (not speed) of
300 miles in order not to be destroyed at speeds of 1000 mph.
My apologies.
