This thread resurrected a memory of something I did over 40 years ago.
Let's call it a youthful indiscretion. My summer instrumental music camp
also included a mixed chorus. The director was drawn from Hollywood High
School and he was something of a jerk. Yelled at us at every turn to get
what he wanted. I remember yelling back at him and telling him that he'd
lost the confidence of and control over the group.

Well, it was more empowerment than I really wanted because the chorus was
dissolved and we were guided through other activities for the rest of the
two week session.

Still, it offers an interesting parting shot for anyone who doesn't care
one way or another about continuing membership in a musical group. I agree
with other participants in this thread that such people really are
vulnerable and standing up to them can handsomely bring out their
vulnerability. Oh, yeah, and as you're walking out, if the conductor's
lips even barely twitch, you offer the standard "Too late for apologies!"

The adult amateur band to which I currently belong has one of the most
unflappable conductors under which I've ever had the pleasure of playing.
We have to do everything to keep him because we've had at least one other
substitute conductor of the other kind.

Oliver
