This is a story from Pamela Weston's book about clarinet players

Conductors and clarinet players

Eugene Goosens, the conductor, in his book "Overture and beginners",
tells this:
He states "the season opened with Lohengrin and during rehearsal I
stopped to adjust the woodwind balance.
"Too loud, clarinets"
Its marked mezzo forte,Mr.Goosens.
Excuse me Mr.Gomez, you are playing it forte
Well, I've always played it that way.
Now this time, just for me. give me a real mezzo forte!
But Mr.Goosens...
Gracious heaven, I shouted, lets get on with the rehearsa!
