From: Bilwright@-----.net (William Wright) Subj: [kl] Band vs. orchestra Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 08:11:29 -0400
We all have dictionaries. I won't waste bandwidth quoting them
here. But the implication that a band is less
distinguished/powerful/expressive than an orchestra is buried in our
language.
One interesting point: New Harvard Dictionary of Music says that
the word "band" was originally anything larger than a chamber ensemble,
and the word "band" originally included orchestras --- rather than being
distinct from orchestras.
Cheers,
Bill
