Subj: [kl] Binding for cracks

Lori,

Although I only used the method of a graphite band once, it seemed to work
well. I used this method when reparing a cracked tenon and there was
insufficient space for pinning.

I have heard of Brannen's technique of using super-glue, but I have my
doubts about the long term efficacy of this solution with large cracks and
deep cracks that run through tone holes. Perhaps the Brannens have found a
superior type of glue that I don;t know about. Generally, I find that
superglue does not penetrate blackwood very well and although it makes a
good filler it tends to break away from constantly expanding and contracting
cracks. Also, you have unfortunately further compromised the ability of
superglue to work on your instrument by applying the beeswax.

The type of banding that your repairman suggested should work fairly well.
The method invloves cutting a groove ( probably several) around the outside
of your instrument. The groove is then wrapped with graphite thread and
applications of superglue. This process only works when the entire perimeter
can be cut without intereference from posts or tone holes. Depending on the
position of the crack this may or may not be feasible. And you have the
unfortunate visible scar.

The old fashioned method of pinning is still the method I prefer and used
for all of my career. When done correctly, pinning stabilizes the wood and
prevents further expansion and contraction. The continued expansion and
contraction of a non-stabilized crack wil cause the crack to either
elongate, break through to the bore or both.

Pins can be strategically placed for maximum efficacy and can be filled so
that very little evidence of the process remains.

I don't repair clarinets any longer, but Tim Clark of Columbus does
excellent crack repair with pins.
