Several years ago (at the Clarinet Congress in London, for anyone who
remembers back that far), I had a lesson with the great bass clarinetist
Josef Horak. He told me that he was the one who did the transcription, that
he played it for Hindemith, and that Hindemith had told him that he preferred
it to the original version (at least as Horak played it). Horak gave me a
copy of his handwritten transposed solo part. I ran through it with a
pianist once, and it worked beautifully.
