I agree totally. I had the most awesome experience this weekend. I actually
got to play first clarinet on the Hindemith symphony in Bb under the
direction of the Great Fred Fennell. We did a bunch of band standards and he
talked with us about the pieces. He also talked about his experiences with
Grainger, the Eastman Wind Ensemble, etc. . The Wind Symphony here at CCM is
good but when he conducted us we sounded 10 times better. My conductor said
that Mr. Fennell would work magic. Speaking of Hindemith I also had the
chance to play principal clarinet on his horn concerto this weekend for a
major event held at my school. I really like the piece and over the years I
have found that I enjoy Hindemith's music a lot more. Especially his
clarinet quintet.
Playing in the same hall with the presence of Van Cliburn and Fred
Fennell was a nerve racking experience this weekend. I thought Cliburn was
dead! I guess I was wrong. Fennell, Cliburn and other classical music
Greats were honored this weekend at CCM. It was the Classical Music Hall of
Fame Induction Concert. We played Carnival Overture by Dvorak, Hindemith
Horn Concerto, and Rachmoninoff Symphonic Dances. I was principal on the
Rachmoninoff (Hard Piece) as well and because of the people in the audience
I was scared out of mind. It went well but my Tux paid for it. I have never
sweat so much in my life. My teacher in undergrad said to never let them so
you sweat. Well this time I could not help it!
