Mine are from 1964, have the tenon cap on the top tenon-upper joint and
top of lower joint because they have the articulated C#/G# key that puts
the tone hole very close to the end of the joint, leaving a weak area.
The cap also extends all the way down into the tenon about and inch or
so, effectively providing a metal lining to the joint.
