I've wondered about the effect (if any) of the way Zonda does their
shoulder.

If you look at a Zonda reed in normal light, there _appears_ to be
no 'straight line' cut above the curved line where the vamp begins.
Larry Guy's book, and also someone here on this list (I forget who),
recommends that you make your own straight line cut if the reed doesn't
have one already.
However if you look in a dim light, you can see that there is a
straight line on a Zonda reed that is extremely shallow --- so shallow
that a bright light washes it out. That is, the cut is so shallow that
it doesn't cast a shadow. The cut may be even more shallow than the
bark's thickness, I'm not sure about this.
Presumably the cut is shallow on purpose. Not that it matters,
because it's the sound that counts.....
