Subj: [kl] I'm simply obsessed

I made a tactical error today. With a lot of work to do including
several commissions for magazine articles, I made the dreadful mistake
of putting on a recording of Krommer wind octet music played by the
Bläserensemble Sabine Meyer. (EMI Classics 7 54383 2)

So extraordinary are the performances of every one of the four octets
performed (op. 51, 71, 76, and 78) that I have given up any hope of
getting any work done and simply turned my full attention to the
recording. I'm now on my third run through of the CD.

I happen to think that the Krommer octets (really nonets, they don't
work well without the 16 foot bass which is played in the recording on a
contrabassoon) are simply marvellous music: clever, intelligent, well
composed, imaginative, fanciful, super pieces. But the playing of
Meyer's ensemble is so exciting, full of energy and gusto that one would
have to be made of stone not to fall in love with both the pieces and
the recording.

It has to be close to 40 years since I first played a Krommer nonet and
I almost fell off my chair at the first one I did. It made me
breathless with admiration. One year at a summer music camp at which I
was an instructor for large-scale wind ensemble music, Larry Combs was
there and he and I played several together all of which he admiringly
classified as "cooking music."

I have no idea why I am writing this note except I am so damn excited.
And now I will be late in getting the articles written. Damn.
