Would it work if you fingered your F# key and trilled the G# key whilst
holding the F# down!

Subject: [kl] Oklahoma/F# trill fingering

Dear all,
I am playing two pieces at the moment that require an F# -G# (top line of
stave)trill (in Bizet Carmen Suite, and the beginning of "Oh what a
beautiful morning" in Oklahoma). I figured that for the Carmen, the way
around the trill is to play the movement on the A clarinet - in fact someone
who had the parts previously kindly wrote out the part for clarinet in A.
Oklahoma is more problematic. The passage that starts with the F#trill is
supposed to be bird song which doesn't (to my ears) sound quite right played
on the A. It seems, though, that whoever wrote the pit parts out may have
had in mind the piece being played on the A clarinet, because the key
signature is wrong - instead of 6#s, the noted key signature is F. This
happens coincidently to be the correct key signature to apply if reading the
notes up a tone and playing the passage on the A clarinet (I think that's
right). The whole show is written for Bb clarinet (with 3 pieces scored for
Bass in the first part as well), so it would be good to avoid having to take
the A out of the case.

So my question is, does someone know a trick fingering for an F# trill? If
not should I simply practice F#-G# methodically with a metronome until I can
make a reasonable fist of a trill, or should I play it on the A clarinet?
And has any played Oklahoma before who can shed some light on the wrong key
signature noted in the performance part for this piece?

Many thanks,
GAVIN
