Subj: [kl] Steve Hartman's new cd

I had the opportunity this evening to listen to Klarinet's 'own' Steve
Hartman on a new cd of concertos by Crusell.

For those of you know not from the NY area, you may not have ever heard of
him. He performs (on clarinet) with the NYC Ballet and Opera orchestras and
the Brooklyn Philharmonic. It's a pretty big deal, actually. He is regarded
as an outstanding principal clarinetist as well as 2nd clarinetist.

I think it would be difficult for anyone to listen to the playing on this cd
and not be very impressed. All of the crucial fundamentals of clarinet
playing are on display. Excellent facility, superb rhythm, lovely sound which
is helped by pure intonation. If you want your students to hear clarinet
playing which reflects in a contemporary way the best traditions of the past,
this is a good recording for them to hear.

But the best thing about the playing is that the facility is all invisible in
the face of the music itself. The playing is all about Crusell and not about
the clarinet or the clarinetist. Good honest musicianship.

The best piece on the disc is the Symphonia Concertante. This work also has
solo parts for Bassoon and Horn. The virtuosity of the writing is very
entertaining, and the other soloists (Marc Goldberg, now bassoonist with the
NYPO and Peter Reit, another active freelancer) are superb. The two concertos
are interesting pieces but not the most outstanding concertos I have heard.

The disc will soon be available at Tower online, I am told. In the meantime
the label's website is www.centaurrecords.com

Congrats Steve, and all recorded in one day too!
