I use the Reed Wizard quite a bit (along with various files, knives and
sandpaper). You're right that most of what it takes off comes from the high
end of the vamp. The RW alters the profile of the reed to fit what Ben
Armato has found to work best. I wouldn't experiment with filing down any of
the metal. That would spoil what's built into it. Instead, get Ben's book,
"Reed Wizard and Beyond," which has lots of good ideas (as well as some wacky
ones). Anyway, you don't need to alter any part of the apparatus. Just
slide the reed toward the front. I often put the corners of the tip even
with the white line nearest the end.
