It sounds like bass clarinet is not necessarily your focus, and that you're
looking for something with a decent response and intonation -- without costing
you a lot of money. Roger Garrett's mouthpiece has already been mentioned
-- in the $70 range, right Roger? During a lesson with Dennis Smylie this
afternoon, he mentioned to me that he steers cash-strapped students toward
a good ol' Vandoren B44 or B45, although he does concede that, being commer-
cially made, one of those might yet benefit from a little hand adjustment
by a qualified craftsman to balance the facing. Smylie himself plays on
a Bill Street mouthpiece (Bill is in the Portland, ME area). I play on
a Fobes. Neither of these latter two are cheap. The Vandorens would like-
ly suit your needs for the occasional concert gig. Price: $95. David Hite
makes a decent model for around $75. Take a look in a Woodwind/Brasswind
catalogue and consider getting a model or two on trial.
