Dear Anne,
A problem I've come up against even at higher levels on the instr.
There is an historical reason for F with rh little finger and E with lh
little finger to do with the open hole on old instr.s for fingering F and
C. May be that is why it has come down to be accepted as the correct
way to play. In my experience new fingerings insinuate their way into our
technique without us noticing, if we have occasion and need to use them.
Hence your pupils will, as they grow and develop and the range of music
they play gets more complicated, become users of the rh F and lh E whether
they like it or not. More interestingly is the way players turn out later on if
they have habitually used the other way. I have found they develop a more
ready coordination of their rh little finger. However real mastery later on
will come from the speed at which fingering choices are able to be made -
the same goes for the miriad no. of useful and possible top G fingerings
and the use of alterantive fingerings across the whole instr.
Best wishes
Nick
