Sorry I can't find my old college books or I would give you a title to
find. There is a nearly excellent book on musical ornamentation from
Baroque to Bach and someone put together a book of J.S. Bach's personal
instructions regarding how ornamentation in his music was to be
performed. Aside from that, GO FOR IT. Your suggestion of first
holding a note a little before you begin the trill is usually OK and
expressive. More suited to solos than ensemble situations where the
trill has to be coordinated. Easier to do when only 2 or 3 players are
involved but impossible when in a band situation with 12 or more
players. Also, in some music written after the Classical period trills
that are to be sustained longer than 2 or 3 beats will require your own
judgment. Sometimes it is ok and sometimes it is better to just begin
the trill immediately and trill fast for effect. Other times the delay
or establishment of the primary pitch and then progressing into the
trill with a gradual increase in the rate of alternation gives a more
pleasing or delicate effect.
