I find this whole thread very comforting. I also am "backwards" - my
immediate
choice is the RH B and the LH C, etc. Over the years, in playing music which
others have penciled up, I find that where it is marked "L" or "R", these are
usually my instinctive choices, but I have to mark the reverse passages.
And I
don't have to mark any more than the other guys.

So it's a difference, but not an important one, IMO. After all, the same pads
are doing the same things for either set of fingerings! One real difference
(and maybe why I started this way?) is that if there is any problem with the
seal on the lowest pad, the RH fingering seems to promote a better seal than
the LH, since the linkage is shorter and the mechanical advantage seems
better. But the bottom line is that you have to become familiar with ALL of
the alternate fingerings, as you are going to need them all. This includes
not
only the alternates for the long notes, but the sliver key and trill key
fingerings as well. Clarinets are reasonably primitive - we don't even have
all the keys we need, and can't afford to neglect any that we have.
