Sorry to reply only quickly again....
I suppose I mean that I don't *miss* vibrato when longer-time-scale
tone-colour variation is being used; and I don't *object* to vibrato
when it's used in a way that doesn't subvert important aspects of the
music -- or rather, what I think are important aspects of the music.
And it all depends on how the player relates that to other
characteristics of their performance, so it's a bit difficult to make a
general pronouncement; but certainly the differences that you mention
would come into the judgement.
