Dear Richard, Jim, Audrey and Roger,
I must confess that over the years I have often reacted with
downright jealousy whenever I have seen others achieve a moment of
glory. I am not a very religious person, but I do go to church every
Sunday because I love to hear Pastor Merv preach about many things,
including the 7 deadly sins. They aren't what many people would think.
They have to do with anger, greed, jealousy, glutony and I forget some
of the others. I think I fell asleep or may have been hung-over from
playing in a bar the night before. I was surprized to learn that I had
just about all of the deadly sins.
In recent years, I can remember listening to Richard Stoltzman's
recording of one of the Brahms Sonatas on a cassett in the car stereo on
the way to a vacation, and thinking to myself, "That sounds terrible!
Put on the EAGLES". Last month I got to meet Richard Stoltzman at Diane
Cawein's Midwest ClariFest and observe him in concert and master
classes, and I have to admit that I enjoyed him very much. He is also a
very sweet man. I had always resented the fact that he is the "Poster
Boy" of clarinet playing. I now consider him to be a friend. I just wish
that I had enough talent and ambition to be part of "Clarinetville".
Sometimes it is hard for me to be happy for everybody's successes,
but I would like to be the kind of person who can be "glad" for
everybody, including Jonathan Colher and Tony Pay. You too, Benjamen.
ANNIE
