Subj: [kl] Ongaku vs. Music

<><> The word for music in Japanese, ongaku, means to enjoy sound
(on is another way to pronounce ne [sound], and gaku means to enjoy).

I don't know whether a word's derivation says anything about
attitude, but it's interesting that the Japanese derivation is to enjoy
what we perceive with our ears, whereas the English derivation is
cloaked in gods (the Muses) and mysteries and things hidden from the
human understanding.
I like the Japanese derivation better.

Cheers,
Bill
