Your equipment probably IS holding you back, although not as much as the
lack of private lessons. If you are doing as well as you are WITH those
handicaps, I would think you would do very well indeed if you could correct
them! Find a private teacher first, and with his/her advice, choose a
better instrument and mouthpiece/reed setup.
