My college clarinet teacher used to jog and bicycle a lot (in the late
60's when not many people were not yet into the health thing). He also ate a
very healthy diet. He said that you should keep your body in excellent
shape. He said that running and bicycling helped his breathing enabling him
to make the long phrases and having better breath control. He felt that
excercise and eating right helped his general physical condition and
coordination as well as giving him the stamina to endure long rehearsals. He
also said being physically fit helped his mental alertness.
I do remember his studio being on the fourth floor of the music building
and seeing him run up four flights of stairs, immediately pick up his
clarinet and play without even being winded. He would also, many times, ride
his bicycle to the college, which was about 70 miles away from his home.
