Just received "Spasm" and "1985" in the mail. Listening to Spasm
as I write this. Order it, people. He does wonderful, diverse
things with the bass clarinet, and he must be the youngest, most
up & coming bass clarinet player on the planet (only 2 years old-
er than I, disgustingly enough). I hadn't heard a single note, but
I knew I was going to like his music when I read his liner notes for
a piece on "1985" called "King Friday" (fine, fine, copyright...let
him sue me for thinking what he wrote was incredibly funny):

"King Friday is a response to an episode of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.
Clarinetist Richard Stolzman [sic] was the guest and the two of them
were at Joe Negre's music shop looking at clarinets. Watching this
episode unfold, I figured this was going to be ripe with possibilities
so I immediately popped in a video cassette. Stolzman was describing
the members of the clarinet family when Mr. Rogers asked, "What's this
big one?" Stolzman answered, "Oh that's a bass clarinet; it's found
mostly in bands; it's pretty obscure and hard to play. There really
isn't much call for it." I was livid. Since both King Friday and Mr.
Stolzman were living in the land of make-believe, I was inspired to
write this piece."

I laughed for the rest of the train ride home! :-)
