Rachael -
As a 72 year old amateur, I have been studying the Mozart using a the
Breitkopf & Haertel edition on which Stanley Hasty had marked 108 to 120. I
prefer a tempo much closer to the 108 than the 120. At 120 it seems rushed
and makes it difficult to perform some of the interpretive nuances that make
this movement the great piece of music that it is. At 120 it seems like a
march and who needs another march?
Since Mr. Marcellus performs it at 108 in his great recording, how can you
go wrong near this tempo. If you want to show off your marvelous technique,
do it in the Rondo, which Hasty marked 76 to 80. At the moment, I don't
recall Marcellus' Rondo tempo, but he took it at a sensible tempo and didn't
turn it into a "circus stunt".
Happy Mozarting!!!!

I was wondering, which is the most accepted metronone speed for the
first movement of the Mozart K622?
I have a CD of Sabine Meyer playing at 120+, and another of Richard
Marcellus at 108.
I will be proforming this soon, and I would like to know which is the
more accepted speed.
