Yes! Now George is here in St. Louis (and has been for the past 32 years)!
I've had the distinct pleasure of working with the man on several occasions,
and he is what I would call "gruff, yet loveable." Hard of hearing, too. I'd
say somehting to him and he'd reply (quite loudly) "Ma'am?!"

I remember at a rehearsal back in November I was sitting next to him, and he
was smarting off to Mark Sparks (the principal flutist) and kicking his
chair. Later, in the rehearsal, he pulled out a small screwdriver and
started tightening the screws to the G# key. I said "Hey, George, what's
wrong? You got a screw loose?" If looks could kill, I'd not be typing this.
Then he grinned and said, "I think that's the nicest thing you've ever said
to me."

Another funny story (from the same rehearsal) that I think earned me his
respect was when there was a couchdrop lying on the floor, and he went and
reached for it like he was going to eat it. Before he could get to it, I
kicked it into the viola section, and he looked at the princ. bassoonist and
said "DID YOU SEE THAT??" And he shook my hand. It was a proud moment for
me, thank God the conductor wasn't looking! Then at the break, he called to
one of the violists saying "HEy, Carl...gimme my coughdrop back!" So he
tossed it back and it landed on our stand and I grabbed it before George
could and threw it back at him. I'm tellin' ya.. that George is a
troublemaker! The conductor says that he's a bad influence on me. :) One
heck of a musician, too. Can we say, amazing?
