If you're not afraid of transposing, there's loads of wonderful vocal music
-- the "Pie Jesu" movement from the Faure Requiem, for example. There's a
version with organ that's almost to beautiful to play "behind" an offertory
or communion. The "Libera Me" movement would work well, too.

If Baptists won't be offended by Lutheran music, there's the whole repertory
of Bach arias. Slow solo arias work very well on clarinet. If you have a
good singer, the arias with oboe d'amore obbligato can be played without
transposing on the A clarinet.

The slower Schubert songs go beautifully on clarinet. "Ave Maria,"
"Gretchen's Prayer" and "An die Musik" come to mind.

The less familiar songs from the Stephen Foster Songbook would work well.
"Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair" might be too familiar and non-religious
in people's minds, but a song like "Gentle Annie" would work.

Let us know what you decide on.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
