Justin,

There have already been a few good suggestions from the Klarinet list. I =
too
have used the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th movements of the Finzi and the Satie
Gymnopedies at Church. I have also used the Schumann Fantasy Pieces, and =
all
of the slow movements from the Mozart Concerto, the Wanhal Sonata, the Ta=
rtini
Concertino (transcription), the Poulenc Sonata in church settings. Other
possibilities would be Debussy's "Girl with the Flaxen Hair" or the Copla=
nd
Concerto, stopping at the cadenza in the middle. All of these are specifi=
cally
SECULAR pieces of music, so it would be up to your choir director, music
minister, or pastor to decide whether it is appropriate (I usually didn't=

askahead of time, I just played it at the appropriate time <grin>). =

As for sacred music (or music appropriated for religious services) I am
surprised no one has mentioned the 4 Church Sonatas (Mozart) arranged for=

Clarinet and accompaniment by Yona Ettlinger. It was just mentioned in an=
other
post recently. Also, I have used the Pie Jesu from the Rutter Requium
transcribed for clarinet instead of oboe on the oboe solo (with a reducti=
on of
the choral parts to a soprano soloist). There is lots of stuff from Orego=
n
Catholic Press (www.ocp.org) and GIA Publishers (www.giamusic.com) that c=
an
help you with music composed for christian services with biblical text (c=
horal
and vocal music with instrumental obbligatos.) Marty Haugen and David Haa=
s are
two names that will appear over and over again for contemporary sacred mu=
sic
written with instrumental obbligatos. Oregon Catholic Press has a book ca=
lled
"Traditional Choral Praise" that has obbligatos for almost every hymn in =
the
book, and most of the hymns should be familiar to all christian faiths. =

Whew! I guess I got long winded (not that I ever do that.) If you need mo=
re
help, contact me off the list. I have been doing instrumental church musi=
c for
18 years, so I may already have an arrangement for something that is not =
in
print, or I may have done an arrangement for that piece to go with clarin=
et or
another instrument. Good luck!
