I've been asked to play for a Holocaust Memorial Service next month, and need
recommendations of pieces that might be appropriate. They'd like a short
selection before and after the speaker, ideally on Jewish-sounding themes
with a plaintive quality. They called me because I played a couple of the
"Four Hebraic Pictures" collected by Simeon Bellison on my last recital, but
most of those are fast and wouldn't work well for this event. I have a
klezmer fake book, but don't know which pieces, if any, are appropriate. I'd
be willing to transpose if necessary - maybe there are violin pieces that
would work? Can anybody recommend something that has worked successfully for
them, or point me in the right research direction? So far, my efforts on
Sneezy have yielded references to Prokofiev's Overture on Jewish Themes,
which won't work because of the strings, and Krasotov's Rhapsody on Jewish
Themes, which I don't know anything about at all - is it a possibility?
Thanks in advance -
Sue Schwaegler
