One of my many horror stories relates to a pad which fell off at a most
inopportune time. I was playing tenor sax and clarinet in a band which =
was
backing Mel Torm=E9, who as you may know was a multi-talented =
individual -
great singer, pianist, drummer, arranger, author, and probably about
anything else he would care to try. During one show I finished a tune =
on
the tenor with a high D. Unfortunately, when I played the note, the =
pad
fell out of the D key. Not being a smoker, I borrowed a lighter from =
one of
the other people in the band, and proceeded to try to heat up the glue =
in
the pad cup for an emergency repair. Mel Torm=E9, who was sitting at =
the
piano at that moment, noticed my panic and that I was apparently trying =
to
incinerate my saxophone, and struck up the song, "Come on baby, light =
my
fire." His version was, "Come on baby, light my horn!"
