Here's a story contribution.

The Scene: Pit show, doubling, theatre seats about 1000.
60 sec before the only exposed bass clarinet solo bit in the show.

The Problem: Bass clarinet suddenly stops working completely:

The Panic: I look at the instrument, and a pad for an upper
side key has fallen out...... 45 sec. left.

I look to the floor and there is the pad, as I move
to grab it I kick it...duh... it disappears down a
crack in the platform floor. 30 sec left.

The Brainstorm: What to do, what to do,30 sec left, 20 sec.

I grab oboists plastic bag containing reed supplies,
rip off a piece. Find a piece of tissue thrown to the
pit floor, same source, wrapped the tissue in the
plastic, 5sec....shoved the mess firmly into the hole,
2 sec.. and bang... play..it worked! Fortunatley the
uppermost side keys were not required for the balance
of the show. The oboe player enjoyed it, still talks
about it.

I've since upgraded my bass clarinet...love the new Buffet.

Cheers
Dave Renaud
