Larry Guy, in his book Embouchure Building for Clarinetists, has a section
entitled "American Clarinetist Never Smile (While They Play)." I was
taught the smile too, but Larry says "The 'smile' embouchure, once fairly
common, has fallen into disfavor among clarinetists in America, because it
invites air leakage, affords less control of the reed, and tends to allow
the sound to spread and flatten out."

I have found it easy to change to an embouchure along the lines of what
Larry recommends since my chin position was already ok.
