There is a possibility that a small clarinet collection may become
available for purchase by an institution. I believe that the collection
includes approximately 50 instruments. None of them are outstanding, and
they are not restored, but the advantage for an institution is that they
are carefully catalogued in some detail. They have not yet been valued but
my guess is that the valuation will be around $20,000. The collector also
had a few other instruments, particularly bassoons, that would presumably
also be available but these apparently do not have the advantage of
detailed cataloguing. I believe that more information will become available
within a month or so but I am posting this information now because my guess
is that once they have been released for sale, things may proceed fast. I
will pass on e-mail addresses of anybody whose institution has a serious
