I just wanted to add a note on the "chair competition" stress that is often
created because of chair placement. I teach middle school band and we seat
the firsts in order and then all the reast are dispersed throughout the
section-they may not have a clue as to their real seating and it creates a
stronger clarinet section for the band. As a private teacher and a band
director, I feel it is so important for each child to feel valued within the
ensemble. I talk to the band alot about the " we" factor. As a result I
deal with far less of the nasty competition between students. When we do
have seating auditions I make a point to tell students how to improve and
what they have really made progress on. As a middle school teacher I firmly
believe in being honest with the kids and doing all I can to help them
improve! The end result is a happier band class and a better sense of
support between the students.
