I've had a similar problem starting back in middle school, and it's kind of
interesting how things work out.
A girl joined my band in 7th grade on Alto clarinet, she'd come from a different
school and none of us really knew her at all. She was pretty good and learns
quite quickly, so she got bored on Alto and switched back to soprano. She worked
her way up the chairs pretty swiftly until partway through 8th grade she sat next
to me (I was principal). At this point however, we were also best friends.
In High School the rivalry began, since we were starting fresh and our friendship
kind of took a dive. Through the last 4 years we've kind of switched roles from
time to time-- we even tied for 4th chair once and ended up switching seats every
single day.... I feel kind of sorry for the people who sat next to us. ;)
Now though, we've come to grips a little bit better and we're friends *and*
rivals. This can't work for everyone, but it's really a nice situation. We're
there for eachother, rooting eachother on constantly, but also always in
competition to make eachother better.

I honestly hope the girl you're dealing with calms down and stops making fun of
you. You sound like you're dealing with things as well as you can though. Keep
being tough.
Good luck!
Chrissie
