For what it's worth,
As I understand it, in a Viennese waltz, the second beat comes a little
early... but I could be confusing my waltzes:).

In the band in the village I am living we had - as usual on Friday night - a
rehearsal. With the students' orchestra we played the "King Arthur suite",
by the dutch composer Kees Vlak. The third part is in 3/4, the waltz beat,
so to speak.

On my klaribass I played the trombone part. In that third part you plkay
mainly "rest"- 2 - 3 "rest" - 2 - 3and so on. Suddenly, after about 48 bars,
the director stopped and told me ït is not a Vienna waltz". I don't
understand what he meant by that, after rebeginning from the first bar he
never stopped again and was quite content with me. But I don't know, what
made the difference: to be sure of hat I was doing I sometimes counted
"hmm - 2 - 3", sometimes I didn't. But I also did so before he made his
remark, as I had never seen the piece before.

Now my question is: what is the difference between a Vienna waltz, the
Shostaskowitch second waltz, and other pieces in 3/4 beat?
