Joe,

The problem is probably due to the mouthpiece. I agree with Karl that you
have made a rather big step in facings, but I think that the problem may be
in the specific mouthpiece you are playing.

It is common for Van Doren mouthpieces to have very rough or sharp edges
where the window meets the tip and side rails and this may be a contributing
factor.

Also common to Van Doren clarinet mouthpieces is an asymmetry to the right
side instead of being parallel or asymmetric to the left. The asymmetry to
the right side can cause problems that include instability, stuffiness and
poor response.
