As far as fingerings go, I would agree with Dee and hold down the fingers on
the right hand while playing the Bb - in fact, I usually hold down as much of
the left hand as I can, too. But, if the players can't manage alternating
the two notes fast enough to give a tremolo effect, there are a couple of
ways you can simulate it. Divisi by stand, having one player take the D and
the other the Bb. They should each sustain their note through the entire
measure, playing an ordinary tremolo, which is accomplished by very rapid
light tonguing (think of the effect string players get by moving the bow
rapidly back and forth while sustaining a note). You won't get the
alternation between pitches, but will get a similar shimmering effect.
Alternatively, the inside stands can divisi and sustain the pitches softly as
whole notes while the outside stand either plays the fingered tremolo or the
ordinary tongued tremolo I just described. In any case, while I don't know
this piece, I'll bet this tremolo isn't the most important thing going on, so
pick the technique that most easily allows you to get the best musical effect
- very likely background to something else.
