I was having a discussion with a friend/professional
musician who was giving me some advice as I am leaving
engineering to go into music. He was wondering if I
really knew what I was getting into? He asked me if
I'm willing spend my retirement savings and sell my
material possessions just for the opportunity to get
to that audition in Kansas City? Or am I willing to
compromise my artistic "purity" and play weddings,
Xmas parties, polka music, etc. just to pay next
month's rent.

While this isn't dissuading me from changing careers,
it was an interesting perspective on music, and art in
general. Some people on this list have "made it",
some have found a good balance with free-lance or
teaching, or and some just play for enjoyment.
However, I'm sure all would agree that it takes a lot
of strength, love for your art, and courage to
sacrifice everything just for one more
one-in-a-million chance of making a major orchestra or
signing a recording contract for your band.

Anyone got spare change for a ticket to KC? :-)
