Klarinet Archive - Posting 000014.txt from 2001/03
From: Bilwright@-----.net (William Wright) Subj: [kl] Anna Magdalena's Notebook Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 17:40:04 -0500
An edition of this notebook (songs assembled by J.S. Bach for his
wife, but little of it composed by Bach himself) includes a few
sentences about autographs which give me some understanding of why
musicians care about autographs, even if their goal is not to reproduce
exactly what the composer intended.
I would like to share it with you:
"No printed edition, of course, can truly substitute for the handwritten
original in which accident and planlessness [sic] played such an
important part. Many peculiarities and oddities of its contents can be
revealed in toto only by the facsimile edition. Modern print and
bookmaking prevent the inclusion of the characteristic features of the
personal handwritings, the various degrees of carefulness, the
significant trace of usage and wear and the undefinable spiritual
element in this precious relic.
Cheers,
Bill
