Roger, we had a debate about this, what maybe six months ago. I at that time
stated that I now dry my reeds, during the break-in period upside down, in
the manner that Howard Klug advocates.

The way I was taught, was as you mentioned, to let them dry flat side on the
glass.

I now believe that either technique can be nade to work. However, if you are
going to let the reeds dry flat side on the glass, it is important to dry
them thoroughly with the fingers first, evening out the moisture, and even
polishing the reed somewhat with the oils on your fingers. This is the way I
was taught by John Mohler, if I remember correctly.

Maybe, I'm just a little sloppier or more careless in my old age, but I find
drying the reeds on their backs, while they are breaking in, to work fine for
me. After they are broken in, I use the Vandoren grooved reed holders, wiping
away excess moisture before storing the reeds.

I dont believe that there is a right or wrong here. I do believe that we
consciously, or unsubconsciously, temper our reeds to form the sound with
which we are comfortable.

I have heard you play and find your sound, admirable, I'm sure you agree that
mine is adequate.

Walter
