I don't think it's that strange. I play clarinet and double bass! And I've
done a lot of both in orchestra. What is so nice about it is that I get to
experience differing roles, sometimes in the same piece (played at different
times obviously). As long as you can commit to both and don't let the
technique of the one interfere with the other, I say go for it! Besides,
playing the double bass strengthened my fingers considerably!
