This isn't exactly a clarinet problem, but I'm hoping someone might have an
idea for me or experience with this. I have a piano student who just came to
me this year, though he has been studying for several years with a teacher in
Germany. He knows the names of the notes on the staff as well as on the
keyboard and can name them off when I ask him. When it comes to playing the
music, however, he refuses to go by the note names and instead tries to guess
what the notes are, depending on whether they go up or down. Even when he
misses a note he continues to guess note after note, often getting
frustrated, until I stop him and make him tell me what the name is. I know
that part of his problem is that he doesn't practice much, but is there some
sort of trick or gimmick that I can use to make him read the notes on the
page? I've only been teaching for a few years and I have never experienced
this problem.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Robyn
