A few days ago I referred in a message to the highly respected =
musicologist,
Walter Kaufmann. Among many other areas, he was an expert in the music =
of
the classical and romantic periods. I can report what he said in a =
class on
music of the classical era concerning the minuet and L@-----. He =
said that
throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, there are two types =
of
minuet movements that appear. One is the more courtly type, usually =
played
at a fairly brisk tempo (he didn't mention any metronome markings), and =
the
more folk-like type, or L@-----.
Unfortunately, Kaufmann is no longer living, so it isn't possible to
reconfirm that now.

The Harvard Brief Dictionary of Music says that it is "an Austrian =
dance
popular about 1800, in rather slow triple time and approximating the =
waltz.
It was also known as Deutscher Tanz. Mozart (K. 606), Beethoven =
(M=F6dlinger
T@-----. =
Other
examples are the third movement of Beethoven's Symphony no. 8 and the =
Trio
of the Scherzo in Bruckner's Romantic Symphony, no. 4."

Beyond the listed examples, I think it is up to every musician, when =
playing
dance movements in triple meter from the classical or romantic eras, to
decide for themselves which type is represented and what tempo is
appropriate.
