When I was studying the quintet back in the dark ages, my teacher told me
that a "Landler" is like a German beer-drinking folksong. He said that you
can get the essence of this section of the last movement if you think of a
German pub with the beer steins swaying back and forth to the music. He said
this was another one of Mozarts little jokes, putting a beer-drinking song in
the middle of the quintet. Has anyone else heard this? When you play it
with that in mind, it does seem to make sense. At the very least it makes it
interesting. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that I just about
everyone I met in Norman this past summer drank beer at nearly every meal,
the concerts were so close to some excellent bars, and beer was even served
in the lobby of the auditorium, and we will be in New Orleans this summer.
Any comments?
