Many, many years ago our weekly musical ended on a Sunday and I left my bari sax in
the orchestra room. On monday another traveling band was going to play for the week
then following that week the musicals would resume. When Monday came around I got
to thinking 'it's dumb to leave the sax unattended for a week with another band
using our band room' . So that evening about 6:30 ( knew the band room would be open
for the other band) I went downtown to pick up my instruments. I walked into the
room and the band had just left to go on stage. When I picked up my bari someone
had come to lock the door to protect the other guys instruments. When he saw me
with the bari he said, "Do you play bari". I said "Yes, I was part of the regular
house band here". He said "Our bari player just came down with the flu would I mind
playing his part, I could wear one of the extra uniform coats that they carry for
emergencies". Of course, being a good Scot, I couldn't refuse a band in distress
and said, "Yes, I would be happy to help out". The band was Count Basie. What an
experience. The hardest thing to do was relax because of the enormity of the
opportunity. They were good and so laid back, anyone could have fit in.
