Laura M asked:
<<<I'm a clarinetest who has recently started playing french horn as a
second instrument. Am I insane?>>>
Yes.
<<<I'm just asking because a few people have told me so. Because of the
brass-to-wind-"it'll mess up your embochre"-thing.>>>
Oh, I have to disagree with that. Of course, the time you are spending
practicing horn won't be time that you could be practicing clarinet, but
other than that I don't think that there will be any detriment.
I play enough trumpet to be dangerous, but haven't found that it impedes
clarinet playing in any way. It can help in a number of ways, though -- if
you end up playing horn competently, you'll learn a lot about creating and
managing your air supply, improve your ear training, and get some really
cool parts in Mahler symphonies.
The insanity stems from, well, horn players. As a rule, they're pretty
distasteful, what with spinning their instruments in the air, emptying about
20 slides all the time and generally splatting about. (Just because you
have a license to spit on the floor doesn't mean that you have to do it.)
Besides, as my good horn-playing friend Barney puts it, horn is terribly
frustrating -- no matter how good you are, when you blow into one end you're
never really sure what is going to come out of the other.
I suspect that you wont take this advice and stick to clarinet and good
taste, so I suppose I'll just have to wish you luck.
