Maybe about twelve years ago or so, I was playing my (then) regular
Sunday-afternoon jazz jam session in a Northern Virginia club, and I was in the
back of the room, packing up my bari sax as I had to leave early that day (can't
remember what for). I saw a couple of musicians, a tenor sax player and an
upright bassist, walk in and sit up front near the bandstand, and I watched out
of the corner of my eye as the sax player took out his horn, a beautiful
black-lacquer Keilwerth. I kept packing up and left out the back door of the
club. The next week I found out that the gentlemen were Branford Marsalis and
his bass player, who were in town for a Blues Alley gig that night and had
stopped by the club to jam for a bit. Had I stuck around, I could have jammed
with Branford! I was bummed.
