This isn't a 'proper' one, but because the stage-prop cuckoo-clock
for Stravinsky's 'The Rake's Progress' had gone wrong, I once had to
play the twelve cuckoos of 'midnight' in the pit, at short notice.

I quickly worked out what I thought was a good fingering, written sharp
Ab to flat F (xxo/xxo to xxx/xox), which also had the right sort of
sound. But then when it came to it, I totally ruined the effect by
playing the last 'cuckoo' a bit slower and softer. I realised even as I
did it that this was quite wrong -- but it was too late.

As someone said sarcastically afterwards, "How very *musical*!"
